There Is Beauty in Just Maintaining Your Weight: 5 Tips to Help You Maintain

Jul 26, 2025

Lately, I’ve just been maintaining. But I’ve realized how valuable it is to simply maintain the weight you’re currently at. Because when you’re ready to lose weight again, you can pick up right where you left off on the scale—you haven’t lost any ground.

I’m not used to maintaining. In the past, I’ve always been either gaining or losing weight—never staying the same.

But what I’ve discovered through maintaining is that I’m actually gaining something even more important: self-control. And for me, that’s an answer to prayer. I simply can’t do this on my own. I like to eat too much. If I’m going to make lasting change, I have to become more than just the current version of me. I have to reach deeper—into a place within myself I’ve never been. Getting to that place may take a long time. Honestly, I’m convinced it could take years.

I’m certainly not the most successful person in the world, but I’ve achieved a lot in my 50 years. I’ve fulfilled every dream in my life—except one: losing all this extra weight. I know I’m not mentally where I need to be yet to lose more, and that brings me back to my original point: there is beauty in maintaining what you’ve already worked for.

After losing 60–70 pounds, I’m doing everything I can to protect that hard work. If that means I have to fight just to keep my head above water and maintain where I am, then so be it—I’ll do it.

Eventually, I hope to reach a place where I can manage what I eat with self-control, without having to focus this hard every day.

So yes—there is real beauty in maintaining what you’ve earned. If you need to lose weight but aren’t ready yet, it may be a perfect goal just to maintain where you are. I hope this encourages someone today. If that’s you—stay strong, and just maintain.

5 Tips for Maintaining Your Current Weight:

  • 1. Celebrate Maintenance as Progress
Maintaining your weight—especially after weight loss—is a victory in itself. Don’t overlook the discipline it takes to hold your ground.

  • 2. Track Without Obsessing
Weigh yourself regularly, not obsessively. Staying aware of your current weight helps you catch small gains early without slipping into extremes.

  • 3. Stay Connected to Your “Why”
Remind yourself why you worked so hard to lose weight in the first place. Reflect on how far you’ve come—it will help you stay motivated to maintain.

  • 4. Allow for Imperfection, But Stay Consistent
Life isn’t about perfect eating. Give yourself grace when you slip, but keep consistent habits like portion control and mindful eating.

  • 5. Prioritize Self-Control Over Willpower
Build sustainable habits instead of relying on willpower alone. Practice saying “no” not as punishment—but as protection for the progress you’ve made.
